I stumbled upon this interesting article on Washington Post which I have included a link to below. The writers of this column have effectively made an effort to get rid of some common misconceptions related to eating. In general , it seems as though many people don't require a lot of evidence based science to form serious opinions about what they should and should not put in their mouths. This is not good practice because it results in people abstaining from eating gluten even though they don't have celiac, or spending too much money on organic food that is incorrectly marketed.
The Washington Post folks mention MSG in their article. I love this because, MSG actually a really cool food product! Mono-sodium glutamate (MSG), is sodium which is obviously salt and glutamic acid. Glutamic acid is a non-essential amino acid meaning it is found in most living things. Neither of these substances, consumed in typical amounts, are going to cause any harm to the bod. This includes BS allergic reactions!
It think MSG is cool because it significantly contributes to the umami taste sensation. Umami provides a pleasant savory feeling which is recognized differently from a distinct salty taste. This provides satiety and comfort from food without the addition of calories. Broths, tomatoes, soy sauce, and fermented foods are good sources of this yummy low calorie taste.
